Humboldt Park United Methodist Church is a community of believers who proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and who witness to our congregation, our neighborhood and our world of the new possibilities for life which Jesus Christ gives us. For over a hundred years our task has been to bring persons into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ and into this Christian fellowship, to help persons grow as disciples of Jesus Christ, and to send forth these disciples to live and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ for all the world.
Our predecessor congregations, representing the Methodist Episcopal and Evangelical United Brethren Churches, began in ministry over one hundred years ago in two different sites, one in the Humboldt Park neighborhood and the other in the Logan Square neighborhood. The Methodist Episcopal ministry was English-speaking while the Evangelical United Brethren ministry was German-speaking for the first several decades of its existence. A 1968 merger of these two predecessor denominations resulted in the two congregations forming the current Humboldt Park United Methodist Church and continuing in ministry at the Logan Square site on the corner of Mozart and Shakespeare Streets.
This congregation launched a Spanish-speaking ministry shortly after the 1968 merger. Through the years the congregation has become a predominantly Spanish-speaking congregation, but it has always been language-sensitive as it has provided for simultaneous translation into English during worship services, and also by conducting some children’s Sunday School classes, United Methodist Youth Fellowship, and some special meetings in English.
Whichever the language has been, the congregation has been blessed by God in offering a full gospel ministry to our community throughout the years. This range of ministry includes opportunities throughout the week for worship, prayer, Bible Study, Christian fellowship, and witnessing in both word and action through our community ministry partner Humboldt Park Social Services. This community agency for changing lives has focused on ministries with individuals and families who have been homeless and hopeless, but who now have both homes and hope thanks to a dedicated staff and volunteers, all of whom have been instruments of God’s healing and strengthening power.
New, living history is in the making every day. We, the people of Christ in Humboldt Park United Methodist Church will continue forward in faith and courage to serve God and neighbor in life-transforming ways.
La Iglesia Metodista Unida Humboldt Park es una comunidad de creyentes que proclama a Jesucristo como el Señor y Salvador, y que da testimonio a nuestra congregación, nuestro vecindario y nuestro mundo de las nuevas posibilidades para la vida que Jesucristo nos da. Por más que cien años nuestra tarea ha sido traer a las personas a una relación de salvación con Jesucristo y a un convivio cristiano, ayudar a las personas a crecer como discípulos de Jesucristo, y a enviar a esto discípulos a vivir y proclamar las Buenas Nuevas de Jesucristo para todo el mundo.
Nuestras congregaciones predecesoras, representando a las Iglesias Metodista Episcopal y Hermanos Unidos Evangélicos, empezaron en ministerio hace más que cien años en dos sitios diferentes, uno en el vecindario de Humboldt Park y la otra en el vecindario de Logan Square. El ministerio Metodista Episcopal era en inglés y el de los Hermanos Unidos Evangélicos era en alemán por los primeros varios décadas de su existencia. Una fusión de estas dos denominaciones predecesoras en 1968 resultó en la formación de esta congregación actual de la Iglesia Metodista Unida Humboldt Park y continuando en ministerio en el sitio de Logan Square en la esquina de las calles Mozart y Shakespeare.
Esta congregación lanzó uno ministerio en español un poco después de esta fusión de 1968. Durante estos próximos años la congregación ha llegado a ser mayormente hispanoparlante, pero siempre ha sido sensible con respeto a los que hablan inglés, proveyendo las interpretaciones simultáneas para los cultos de adoración, y también ofreciendo algunas clases de la escuela dominical para los niños en inglés. También se ha hablado inglés en los Jóvenes Metodistas Unidos, y en unas reuniones especiales.
No importa cual ha sido el idioma, la congregación ha sido bendito por Dios al ofrecer un ministerio del evangelio completo a nuestra comunidad por todos estos años. Esta gama de ministerio incluye las oportunidades por toda la semana para la adoración, la oración, el estudio bíblico, el convivio cristiano, y dar testimonio en ambos palabras y acciones por medio de nuestro socio en el ministerio comunitario Humboldt Park Social Services. Esta agencia comunitaria para cambiar las vidas se ha enfocado en los ministerios con los individuos y familias que han vivido sin domicilio y sin esperanza, pero ahora tienen ambos hogar y esperanza gracias a un equipo dedicado de empleados y voluntarios, todos que han sido los instrumentos del poder de Dios que sana y fortalece.
Cada día se hace la historia nueva y viva. Nosotros el pueblo de Cristo en la Iglesia Metodista Unida Humboldt Park seguiremos adelante en fe y valor para servir a Dios y al prójimo por los medios que transforman las vidas.
